Simultaneous interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting is the most appropriate method for meetings, conferences or seminars with various languages in which fluid and immediate communication is required, since the interpreting reaches the participant instantly.
When performing simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter, seated in a soundproof booth in front of a microphone, listens to the speaker's speech through headphones and translates it in real time to another language for the delegates, who listen through receivers.
The collaboration of the organizers of the event is extremely important to the quality of the interpreting. They may provide the interpreters with documentation, reference material or glossaries. This collaboration is crucial when a document is to be read or cited. In this case, the interpreters must receive a copy beforehand. In short, interpreting is always a group effort.
This is especially true inside the booth, where two interpreters work in turns, changing approximately every half hour to avoid exhaustion, which reduces the coherence of the output. While one of the interpreters translates, the other acts as copilot, looking up terminology, providing the necessary documents to his or her partner, discussing any problems with the organizers of the event, etc. For this reason, except in very brief meetings (40 minutes maximum), interpreters should never work alone.
In a multilingual conference, it is important to minimize the risk of creating misunderstandings, so we hire interpreters that can understand the speaker directly without having to translate what another interpreter is interpreting (in other words, through relay interpreting).
To perform his task, the interpreter must have, in addition to a good acoustic setting, a complete and direct view of the room where the ceremony will take place. Sometimes it may be necessary to use complementary media to improve the view of the room (TV monitors), especially if transparencies and slides are to be displayed far from the interpreting booths.
